Riga Cathedral is the symbol of Riga and one of its main attractions. It is the largest middle-age church in Baltic States. The Cathedral has been founded on July 25 1211, on St Jacob’s day by the Bishop of Riga Albert Buxthoeven. Nowadays is the main church building of Latvian Evangelistic-Lutheran Church, and also concerts of organ and religious concerts are held there.
The main attraction of the Cathedral is its organ of 25-meter height which includes 6768 metal and wood tube of the length from 13mm and up to 10 m. At the moment of its construction it was the biggest in the world. Its façade – the prospect – has great artistic value, its central part keeps original décor of the instrument of the late 18th century. Major part of its carving is dated to 1599-1601 years. Big Organ of the Cathedral is considered to be one the most important monuments of German organ romanticism in Europe. Due to its dimensions, designs and modulation though not due to the number of tubes it is considered the biggest organ of the Baltic region and ex-USSR.
Such famous composers created works for Cathedral as Ferenc Liszt and Maximilian Reger.
